Emotional expression: (What is the situation where you need to improve your emotional intelligence response?)
Eg. When a staff member get angry and shouts
Did you actively listen in this situation? (Did you listen and repeat back what you heard to prove you were listening?)
Yes, I listened, however I did not paraphrase as much as I could have to gain their trust that I understood
What was the person/s tone of voice? (Did their tone imply how they were feeling?)
Angry and loud
Was there any facial expressions of body language that you observed?
Red in the face and they stood up and were leaning forward Put yourself in their shoes – what would you do
differently as a result?
Thinking from their perspective, you can understand the frustration – as a result I would start the conversation
differently and acknowledge the ongoing frustration with no changes made in the company to address the issue
What emotions were you feeling?
Distress and lacking confidence
What were your strengths?
I listened and heard them out without walking away after delivering message
What were your weaknesses?
I didn’t paraphrase enough and started the conversation in a way that made them more volatile
What action will you take in future?
Think about it from their perspective before talking to them Start the conversation by addressing their needs Paraphrase more so they know I understand
