February 27, 2022Environmental Degradation
It is one of the most important aspects of environmental issues. It is because, in today’s world, environmental degradation is a globally discussed issue. It found that due to the rapid growth of population as well as urbanization, a lot of harm has been imposed on the environment. It is from cutting down of trees or deforestation to the disposal of waste materials are the common aspects which have been encountered by the people of the world. In order to meet the population growth, more green covers are being removed to accommodate the people for their shelters. As a result, the places and the areas are getting filled with concrete jungles. A lot of waste materials are also being discharged by the people because of the growing population. Therefore, those waste products are dumped here and there and as results it sometimes creates communicable diseases. Therefore, environmental degradation has to be dealt with seriously in order to protect the people as well as the balance of nature (Shahbaz, Nasi & Roubaud, 2018).
b. Videos on GCED and others on the chosen topic
Global Citizen Education (GCED) is the lesson that enables us to become better and responsible global citizens. It is the teachings that educate us to become aware of the ongoing global issues that can evaluate the various problems of the people. There are several issues related to environmental issues, peace, health and much more about which the citizens are required to be conscious and care (Usman et al., 2020). It is not only because of one’s own care and convenience. However, for the mutual benefit of all the citizens of the world. Global Citizen Education also respects the values of justice, equality and diversity and takes the necessary actions to bring changes. Sustainable development is another value of Global Citizenship Education. The world today has been combating various forces. It is from pandemics to various other global issues like Covid-19. It is where we have seen the millions of people in the world who got affected by its consequences. Some of them have lost their jobs while some of them also lost their lives because of getting infected. However, the citizens of the world never stopped for any reason. The people by taking adequate measures and daily precautions continue to sustain in their life. It is because the people who were got aware and educated through the spread of awareness have made their lives safe and secured. Therefore, these citizens across the world took the responsibility to fight unitedly against the Covid-19 pandemic to sustain the environment.
Therefore, this proves how the global citizens were able to sustain by respecting the norms and regulations of the world has managed to fight against the pandemic to bring effective change in the world. It is because each one of them took the initiative to put up their fight against the covid-19 pandemic. Therefore it is concluded from the Global Citizen Education that this has been making the world a better global player with responsibilities and the urge of bringing changes as well as respecting diversity and equality. The three conceptual dimensions of GCED are behavioural, socio-emotional and cognitive. The major changes that it brings to the people are the change in the behavioural aspects. It is because the change in the behaviour of the global citizens brings notable changes in the environment. Here the educated citizens are made to know how they will take their responsibilities and care towards the environment in order to protect from the harmful effects. Therefore, the change in the behavioral aspects of GCED makes a notable initiative to change the effects of the environment. However, the behavioral aspects can change only through proper knowledge and education on the environmental aspects. The one more feature of the GCED is the cognitive, here it states, the mental process for gaining knowledge, thinking, judging and problem-solving. Therefore, with these three conceptual dimensions, it can be concluded that the GCED urges people to educate themselves to resolve the environmental issues related to wastage, degradation and lots of other aspects that can harm their well-being.
Environmental Degradation
The environmental degradation causes various factors on the planet. We are aware that pollutants are of – soil, air, water etc. Therefore, harmful effects on the natural resources cause serious degradation on the ecological balance of the earth. The emissions of smoke from various industries and factories make the fresh air contaminated for breathing. There are also various harmful chemicals discharged from the factories like- acids that flow into the water bodies, which ultimately make the life of various aquatic animals dangerous. Moreover, the waters which are collected by the water bodies also make it unfit for drinking. It is because the discharges of harmful chemicals into the water bodies make it hazardous (Thomas et al., 2019). Deforestation or cutting down of trees makes the soil cover loses its fertility and ultimately makes it unfit for cultivation. Therefore, environmental degradation comprises various factors that harm the effectiveness of the environment. Moreover, it also deteriorates the livelihood of the people of the world and causes various communicable diseases. Therefore, proper precautionary measures and awareness has to be taken from the viewpoint of the benefits of the human beings as well as various other living creatures that the environment should act as a wall that protects and preserves the wellness of the people’s life. The life of the people depends a lot on the wellness of the environment. Therefore, the important aspects of the environment have to be protected by hook or by crook to protect the wellness of the people. The air, water, soil are the three important features of the environment, therefore in order to preserve and protect the well-being of the people and the population. It is urgent and necessary to take care of environmental issues with notable measures to protect it from the harmful effects and various hazardous aspects of the environment. A lot of waste materials are also being discharged by the people because of the growing population. Therefore, those waste products are dumped here and there and as a result, it sometimes creates communicable diseases. Therefore, environmental degradation has to be dealt with seriously in order to protect the people as well as the balance of nature. It is one of the most important aspects of environmental issues. It is from cutting down of trees or deforestation to the disposal of waste materials are the common aspects which have been encountered by the people of the world. Therefore, environmental degradation causes serious setbacks to mankind. The life of human beings and trees helps to maintain the balance in the ecosystem. However, degradation of the environment makes a breakdown in the balance of nature, where the existence of living creatures comes under scanner.
c. 3 conceptual dimensions of GCED brings benefits the society to resolve the environmental issues
The three conceptual dimensions of GCED are behavioural, socio-emotional and cognitive. The major changes that it brings to the people are the change in the behavioral aspects. It is because the change in the behavior of the global citizens brings notable changes in the environment. The other-dimensional change of GCED is the socio-emotional change that brings the change in the emotional changes of human beings. It is because of the proper education and urges towards the environment protection makes the emotional aspects of the people. Moreover, the people also tend to raise their voice whenever or wherever they find any kind of environmental discrepancies. Therefore, global citizens with the education and knowledge can help society for the protection of the environment from its harmful effects and proper measures (Herndon, 2020). The one more feature of the GCED is the cognitive, here it states, the mental process for gaining knowledge, thinking, judging and problem-solving. Therefore, with these three conceptual dimensions, it can be concluded that the GCED urges the people to educate themselves to resolve the environmental issues related to wastage, degradation and lots of other aspects that can harm their well-being. It must be always kept in mind that the environment is the lifeblood of the people. Therefore, due care must be taken for the welfare of the environment to ensure that the people feel free and safe from the hazardous effects of environmental degradation. However, with the consciousness of the people, it has made the belief that the people can deliver the best of their knowledge, habit and education.
There are various malpractices related to environmental degradations like deforestation, wrong agricultural practices that affect the environment. However, the consciousness and awareness of the people have made them feel aware that the environment can be protected and can be saved from destruction. One of the central goals that are crucial for the achievement of the other 16, is SDG4. It states inclusive and equal and equitable quality education and promotes life-long learning opportunities for all possible through Global Citizenship Education and education for sustainable development. Therefore, proper precautionary measures and awareness have to be taken from the viewpoint of the benefits of the human beings as well as various other living creatures that the environment should act as a wall that protects and preserves the wellness of the people’s life. GCED places an emphasis on addressing learning contents and outcomes, pedagogy and learning environment in formal, non-formal and informal learning. The process to reach the concept of Global Citizenship Education was started many years ago, especially in 1974, with the UNESCO Recommendation concerning Education for International Understanding, co-operating and peace and education relating to human rights and fundamental freedoms. One of the advantages of GCED is that it can be contextualized, meaning that it can focus on what we want to teach. GCED is also the education that can bring to all people the knowledge, actions, values and communications skills to take care of their ecosystems. Education for sustainable development is a holistic way to educate (social, economic and environmentally speaking) in this globalized world that is facing challenges such as climate change, poverty, social and political issues (Lu et al., 2020). It can focus on environmental, human rights, gender equity or even prevention of violence.
