September 19, 2022Health and Safety Task 2A
September 19, 2022Assessment 2
Length: 2000 words (Part A; 1000 words Part B 1000 words)
References: Minimum of 10 required
Throughout this topic we have examined the critical nature of understanding how young children acquire language. In this assessment you will:
* demonstrate your knowledge of language development and how it is foundational to literacy development
* examine the importance of using evidence based pedagogical practices that develop language, literacy and communication in the early years
* be aware of theories underpinning how language develops and compare and contrast various approaches.
Assessment 2 consists of a case study and written paper. This assignment requires you to use one phonemic awareness assessment tool (which is provided) and consider how the data can be used to enhance language development. You will examine and discuss a variety of theories relating to how children acquire language and compare and contrast a range of pedagogical practices, including pre-prepared phonics programs. As future educators, you need to engage in critical reflection of how diverse learners learn to read and write across
multiple modalities.
Parts A and B should be submitted as one document and include a reference list.
The screening tool and template are available in the FLO Assessment Hub.
Part A is a case study using a provided, commercial phonics screening tool. It should be completed 1:1 in a pre-school or school setting with a child aged between 4 and 6 years of age. You should then use the template provided to analyse the data and determine next steps for learning, using the Learning Cycle Case Study Session Plan. This template is supplied.
Part B requires you to compare and contrast at least two different approaches to the teaching of reading and writing. Pedagogical approaches should be discussed, including their usefulness for assessment and catering for diverse learners, as you position yourself as an Early Childhood educator.
Part A: Case study 1000 words max.
Use the screening tool provided to conduct a phonics screening check of a child aged between 4-6 years old. Do not identify the child.
Complete the Learning Cycle Case Study Session Plan provided to document the next steps for developing phonemic and phonological awareness of the focus child based upon the data and your analysis. This should be referenced to the appropriate topic literature, theories, the EYLF and Australian Curriculum.
Part B: Written paper 1000 words max.
Position yourself as an Early Childhood educator.
Explain why understanding phonological awareness and phonemic awareness development is important for your role of supporting all children’s’ learning and development..
Discuss relevant theories relating to how young children acquire language and compare and contrast at least two different pedagogical approaches.
In your discussion include what skills are being targeted in each approach and how this links to language development, the EYLF and the Australian curriculum.
Analyse how diagnostic, formative and summative assessment are used in your selected approaches and the usefulness of each approach in teaching a range of diverse learners to read and write.
