The purpose of this assessment is to provide an opportunity for you to link learning theories to teaching practice. This essay may be written from the perspective of a teacher or learner in the health care setting.

Commence the paper with a literature review that focuses on learning and teaching theory/theories that are applicable to teaching in contemporary healthcare settings. Incorporate the role of feedback to the learner and/or teacher in your review.

Then consider a recent learning and teaching episode you have attended as a learner and how the content and delivery met or did not meet the principles of the chosen learning theory/theories and related learning and teaching practices, taking into account feedback and evaluation of teaching. Make evidence-based recommendations for chosen learning and teaching episode improvement, incorporating contemporary learning and teaching practices. Include a summary of the learning and teaching episode as an appendix.

Step 1: Review the assessment task and the resources listed below

Step 2 : Consider a recent learning and teaching episode and how the content and delivery met or did not meet the principles of the chosen learning theory/theories and related learning and teaching practices, taking into account feedback and evaluation of teaching. Review related literature that focuses on learning and teaching theory/theories that are applicable to teaching in contemporary health care settings

Think about the topic. Start to select some key discussion points from the readings (literature review). For example, you may wish to select one contemporary teaching and learning strategy such as simulation.

Key sections for your essay

• Introduction
• Literature review –  appraise a learning or teaching theory/theories relevant to 21st century learners including use of feedback.
•  Recent program – appraise a recent teaching episode and how the content and delivery met or did not meet the principles of learning theory (considered in the literature review) and contemporary teaching and learning practices .
• Recommendations – analyse how a program of education in your own practice context could be constructed to reflect contemporary teaching and learning practices, including taking into account feedback and evaluation of teaching.
• Conclusion
• Appendix (summary of learning and teaching episode you reviewed in your essay)

Note: This assignment is an essay, which usually does not use headings to structure the text. Instead, you should use transition sentences that link between paragraphs to show how your essay moves logically from one idea to the next.

Step 3 :  Conduct a literature search to locate evidence to help you answer the following for your essay.

• Summarise and appraise learning and teaching theory/theories related  to 21st century learner including  the role of feedback .
• Attempt to synthesize your information (compare and contrast). (See What is a literature review? for more information). Please note this is an essay that includes a literature review, the whole paper is not a literature review. Minimum recommend word count for this section 300.

Step 4 : Consider a recent program you have delivered or attended and how the content and delivery met the principles of learning theory (mentioned in the above literature review) described in the literature.

• Write in the third person
• Apply relevant teaching and learning theories
• Incorporate a discussion on feedback

Step 5: Analyse and consider evidence-based recommendations for program improvement related contemporary teaching. In your writing you should take a position as to how a program of education in your own practice context could be constructed to reflect contemporary teaching and learning practices including taking into account feedback. You may want to explore the role of technology or digital learning and the potential role in your teaching and learning.

Step 6 : Formulate draft notes of your essay from the above sources.

Step 6 : Commence writing your essay covering the following key areas:

Introduction: Outline the topic/theme you have selected and how you plan to approach your discussion within your essay. Also outline links to learning theory/theories and teaching practice in contemporary health care settings.
• An introduction is a preview of the assignment.
• It makes a general statement about the issue, topic or area under discussion.
• It sets out the main structure of the assignment.
• It sets out your thesis, that is point of view.
• Be brief but include all your main ideas.

Body – (Literature review, appraisal of recent teaching episode and analysis – separate paragraphs): This should contain a summary of what is known about 21st century learner; learning and teaching theories and the role of feedback; discussion on recent program and the future directions or recommendations.
• This is where you assemble the evidence of your research (literature) and thinking.
• It is here that the bulk of the marks lies.
• You will be assessed on the development and relevance of your information, and any discussion based on that information.
• Your evidence (literature) should be carefully acknowledged with in-text referencing.
• Structure your body into sections (paragraphs) that deal with each part of the assignment question.

Conclusion: this should tie together your main arguments and discussion points made in the body of your essay.
• A conclusion is a review of the assignment.
• It sums up the arguments of the whole text.
• It makes reference to the key terms of the assignment question.
• It reiterates and confirms your thesis.
• It may suggest recommendations or indicate the significance or implications that follow from the conclusion.
• There should be no new information in the conclusion.

Reference List:
• Demonstrates that you have researched the area.
• Demonstrates that you are enlisting the support of someone’s research to support your own ideas
• Demonstrates what ideas or information you have referred to from someone’s research as distinct from your own.
• Demonstrates that you acknowledge and give credit to the work of someone else.
• Make sure that you are familiar with the UTAS Harvard referencing style
• Only include those references that you have used in your assignment (that is those that you have cited in your assignment).

Note: Generally in academic writing you should provide one reference per 100-150 words. This is a 2000 word essay so students should provide between 13-20 references in total. References used should generally be within five years or related to the most recent research in the topic area. Older references would be acceptable if related to seminal texts or foundation learning theories.

Step 7:

Appendix: Include as an appendix the study schedule of the program you delivered or was delivered to you. Please note that you do not need to go through all aspects of the program in the body of your paper as your appendix will include those not able to be discussed. Appendices are not included in the word count and should follow the reference list. This can be your own brief summary.

4. Write clearly and succinctly in an appropriate academic style (in accordance with the School Guide to Presentation of Assignments) and correct referencing (UTAS Harvard). Comply with required word count.
