Rationale
This module aims to provide the students with the ability to increase their understanding of organisations and be able to demonstrate relevant knowledge and understanding of different local and national organisations operating within the Public Service sector. Students will investigate and evaluate the support that Public Services are able to give local communities on a day to day basis and nationally in an emergency situation.
Aims and Distinctive Features
Aims of this module are:
- Develop and acquire confidence in the ability to undertake an in-depth investigation, research and an analysis of the different categories of public services, including emergency response teams, armed forces, local public services such as councils and the voluntary sector.
- Develop student’s knowledge of the strategies behind the planning and management of major incidents and present and analyse an emergency plan for a local major incident.
- Critically evaluate the value of the support that Public Services are able to offer national and to a local community.
- Plan an initiative for a local community group could benefit from public service support.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the learning outcomes learners should be able to:
- Research, investigate and analyse the different categories of public services, including emergency response teams, armed forces, local public services such as councils and the voluntary sector.
- Analyse and evaluate the strategies behind the planning and management of major incidents and their effectiveness and local community events.
- Evaluate the value of the support that Public Services are able to offer a local community.
- Plan and present an initiative for a local community group, with supporting marketing materials.
Learning Strategy
Students will experience a range of teaching and learning methods including interactive lectures, seminar presentations, practical experimentation, workshops, fieldwork, and guest speakers. A student centred approach to the learning is an integral part of the programme as this module has the scope to allow development of personal interests.

Contact time consists of lectures complimented by group research and / or tutorials.

Assessment Strategy / Dates
Coursework (100%) Please note that the marking criteria constitutes the general requirements that must be met to achieve a basic pass mark only. - A 3500 word report investigating and analysing the different categories of public services and how support can be provided locally and nationally. (LO1, LO2) (70%)
- Create and present a display stand which outlines the plan for a local community group initiative, with supporting marketing materials. (LO3, LO4) (30%)

A 3500 word report investigating and analysing the different categories of public services and how support can be provided locally and nationally.
This report should, as a minimum, address the following areas:
Introduction (15 %)
- State which categories of public services you will be researching and investigating
Main Body (65 %)
- Using a range of sources of information investigate and analyse the different categories of public including statutory and non-statutory
- Analyse the strategies behind the planning and management of major incidents applied by public service organisations such as emergency response teams, armed forces, local public services such as councils and the voluntary sector
- Evaluate the effectiveness of planning and management of major incidents, local and national support from public services for major incidents
