December 30, 2023Q 1: Qualities of a Good Preceptor
Preceptors can be stated as the experienced nurses who are formally assigned to provide transitional support to the graduate nurses and the nursing students. They are also employed to support the newly employed nurses and staff and accompany them to the new environment of the workplace (ANMJ, 2020). However, several responsibilities need to be taken by the Preceptors including helping the trainee preceptee to develop a professional career and mentoring and educating the new joiners. In this regard, it can be stated that several attributes are important to make a good preceptor. The attributes can be denoted as follows-
- A good preceptor must have good communication skills. By Hardie et al. (2021), there is a need for the preceptors to develop communication skills and this can be improved with the help of the conscious effort of the preceptor.
- Another skill that makes a good preceptor is “being competent with the clinician”. In this regard, it can be stated that abilities, attributes, and knowledge can be combined at the competency level which is an important aspect for the preceptor within the clinical setting.
- Empathy and patience are recognized as other aspects that are significant to make a good preceptor. By Borimnejad et al. (2018, p.10), Empathy and patience can be identified as the indication of the preceptor to accurately handle and perceive the emotional state of the patient as well as the family of the patient.
- Another quality of a good preceptor is “professionalism”. A good preceptor needs to be professional in any condition to maintain the work ethic.
Q2: Bad preceptor qualities
A bad preceptor does not have the skills of an experienced nurse preceptor. An individual is a bad preceptor if she is not focused on her goals. This makes that lady a bad preceptor. A preceptor program is a method of teaching the preceptor by which an individual can be a good preceptor. The new graduates who have recently passed out and joined as preceptors have the skills of good preceptors but many factors make the preceptors bad preceptors. An individual may be a bad preceptor if she has no basic knowledge about her field of study and if she lacks adjustment power in her role of nursing, then she is also called the bad preceptor (Kurniawan & Bahtiar, 2018, p-36).
If the recent graduate nurse has no basic skills in nursing she is called a bad preceptor as well and when she cannot adopt the profession and practice then also called a bad preceptor. Preceptorship means to relationship between the one preceptor with the new one. Thus if the preceptor has no qualities to build a relationship with the new nurse she is not a good preceptor. These are the skills and qualities which are differing a bad preceptor from a good preceptor. One quality, “emotional intelligence”, is to be considered by the preceptor. If any nurse does not have her basic intelligence she is called a bad preceptor.
