ASSIGNMENT
Introduction and background notes (vocational context)
As a social worker who works in a local authority in East London you are required to have an understanding of what the influences are on the health of the individuals in your community and who you work it. You have recently come across a case in which two people could have benefited from an early intervention from health professionals, teachers, their parents and the wider community.
Task 1: LO1 Understand the socio-economic influences on health.
Peter just moved to the UK as a refugee. He comes from Darfur, Sudan. Peter was recently moved to a care home because of his poorly managed type 2 diabetes. His leg was recently amputated because of his condition. Sarah and Peter have 6 children, who are staying with their mom in a council estate house. The reason they have many children is that according to his culture, he doesn’t believe in family planning. His wife who suffers from depression has not yet found a job, so the family depends on social benefits as their income. They are both smokers and drinkers and
obese.
Your report must focus on the issue of either 1) how the social-economic factors faced by Peter and Sarah influence their health 2) how their predicament could affect their ability or ability of their children to access health care services.
The main focus of your discussion throughout the assignment must be on Health Promotion and should relate to the case study where necessary. Certain models of health promotion and approaches should be addressed to see what could be useful when trying to promote someone like Sarah and Peter to make a lifestyle change to benefit their own, and in this case their children.
You will also then look at Government Initiatives, policies and strategies surrounding this case scenario, and any ethical issues that arise from this situation and discuss this in relation to Sarah and Peter and also their children.
