Assignment title Organisations and Behaviour
Purpose of this assignment
The structure and culture of an organisation are key factors which contribute to motivating the workforce at all levels
of the organisation. The Japanese were instrumental in developing a culture of ‘continuous improvement through
teamwork’ in their manufacturing industry. This culture has now been exported around the world and encapsulates
the way in which structure and culture contribute to patterns of behaviour in the workplace. This unit will develop
learner understanding of the behaviour of people within organisations and of the significance that organisational
design has on shaping that behaviour.
Scenario
You work as a client support manager for a business improvement consultancy called Waltham Clear Vision . You
have been asked to help a major International Technology firm (you can choose one) . Staff development and
involvement at this firm is poor, due in part, to the limited managerial expertise of its founders. Key staff have left
and exit interviews suggest that this is partly because of the power culture created by the two very forceful and
smart individuals who founded the company and the current autocratic management style. The loss of staff to other
technology-based companies with more relaxed cultures and management styles is seen as a threat to the future
success of your chosen firm.
Action is required to brief the non-executive directors and the senior managers to help them understand the nature
of organisational structure and culture and leadership and management and identify their role in business success.
There are many businesses where it is clear how the organisational structure, organisational culture, leadership and
management affect the businesses and contribute to their performance. Two organisations about which there is
such information are Barclays Bank and the NHS .
Further information about these two organisations is widely available and other businesses exemplify the contribution of organisational structure, organisational culture, leadership and management to business performance.
Task 1 (L.O. 1: 1.1, 1.2, and M1, M2, D1)
You have been asked to provide briefings for the non-executive directors and the senior managers to help them
understand the nature of organisational structure and culture and leadership and management and identify their role in the success of businesses. You have investigated a number of businesses to support the points you want to make. Produce a report to brief and inform non-executive directors and the senior managers of your chosen firm in which you need to:
- Compare and contrast the different organisational structures and culture of organisations of Barclays Bank
and the NHS - Explain how the relationship between the organisations’ structure and culture can impact on the performance of the two organisations and the implications of these findings for the management of your chosen firm.
Task 2 (LO2: 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, and M2, M3, D2)
There are different approaches to management and Leadership, you are required to prepare a report that,
- Compares the effectiveness of different leadership styles of Barclays Bank and the NHS.
- You should explain how organisational theory underpins the practice of management and evaluate the different approaches to management used by the Barclays Bank and the NHS and the implications of these findings for the management of your chosen firm.
Task 3 (LO1: 1.3)LO3: 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 and D3)
It is very important to understand the ways of using motivational theories in organisations. You are required to,
- Discuss how different leadership styles impact on motivation in any organisations in different periods of changes and suggest what these maybe.
- Compare the application of the theories of different motivational theories
- Motivational theories can be useful and not useful for managers, discuss this in terms of your working examples.
Task 4 (LO4: 4.1, 4.2, 4.3)
It is very important to understand the tools for developing effective teamwork in different organisation, using the
NHS as an examples you are required to,
- Identify and explain the different types of groups that exists and their behaviours
- Discuss the factors that promotes and hinder development effective team work within the organisation
- Evaluate the impact of technologies on team functioning within the organisation
