February 24, 2022Preparation Stage of Successful Change
Behaviour change involves the efforts a person puts in place to change their habits and attitudes. Behaviour change is challenging where a person may take action towards a set behaviour change goal and relapse to the old habits. However, a person may implement the five stages of successful behaviour change either on their or with a certified wellness coach. These phases include the pre-contemplation level, where one is not ready for change yet, and the contemplation stage, where a person is thinking about making a change. The other phases of behaviour change are preparation, action, and maintenance. Therefore, a person must undergo these stages to ensure positive outcomes of behaviour change.
After the pre-contemplation and contemplation stages, a client undergoes the preparation phase. The phase is exciting, and it involves planning for the behaviour change an individual wants to achieve. In the preparation stage, a person is willing and planning to take the necessary action immediately. An individual is strongly motivated to change the habits and attitudes identified as a problem at the contemplation level (Webb, 2016). A client is also aware of the barriers and obstacles that may hinder their successful behavioural change. Additionally, a person can think of solutions to these barriers (Webb, 2016). The preparation stage is characterized by experimenting and trying different solutions while being mindful of concepts that brought failure in previous behaviour change trials.
The preparation stage in behaviour change is vital as other phases in the process. For instance, an alcoholic identifies their problem of alcohol abuse in the contemplation stage. Therefore, in the preparation stage, the person establishes a plan and identifies the measures to change the alcoholism habit. Similarly, an alcoholic recognizes barriers and obstacles that may lead to relapsing to alcoholism, such as friends and constant alcohol access. They also find solutions to overcome these obstacles. thus, an alcoholic moves to the action stage after successfully performing the activities within the preparation stage.
