March 26, 2022Introduction
Leadership is the process by which a person can influence others in order to achieve the objectives and direct the organization in order to make it coherent and cohesive. Basically, leaders apply various leadership attributes i.e. ethics, values, beliefs, character, knowledge and skills. Leadership influences people with social skills and empathy and not by force and authority. Leaders basically bring positive changes into themselves in order to achieve the organizational goals and objectives. Further, organizational leadership is an ability to identify the potential among the people. It basically includes empowering people and recognizing their innovative thinking (Yukl, 2010). This report focuses on the organizational leadership case study and identifies the strategic challenges to remain ‘fit for future purpose’. For the discussion, the case study of the famous retail company Tesco is selected. The title of the case study is ‘Leadership transitions at Tesco- the challenges in store of Dave Lewis’. It is observed that the company has adopted different leadership styles based on the situations. So, it is a challenge for the company to implement proper leadership strategies. There are some strategic challenges that need to be addressed by new Tesco Chief Dave Lewis with a proper leadership plan (Perepu, 2015).
- One of the strategic challenges is that the company does not know which shopper is to be targeted in the business,
- The company is losing its global business advantages and that would be a big challenge for the leader of the company,
- The retail market is slow and this would be a big challenge for the leader to generate profit in such condition,
- There is the lack of clarity and consistency in the business and this can be a major challenge for the future,
- One of the big challenges is that Tesco is lacking the clear management strategy so there is the need of a proper leadership development plan to manage the business effectively (Anderson, 2015).
Evaluation by reward practices
Reward process basically evaluates and recognizes the performance improvements of the company under the leadership styles. It basically includes two factors i.e. performance challenge and agility resilience that ensure the measures of the progress of the company, remove the blocks of the progress and move to the reflection phase. In case of Tesco, leaders are contributing to the growth of Tesco. Leadership is giving effective directions to the company so; leadership is an essential factor for the success of the business. In order to get desired results, leaders are bringing new changes in their styles. Further, to deal with the performance challenges in the business, the management of the company appoints individuals on the leadership roles so that employees are clear about their roles and responsibilities in order to take strategic decisions in the business. The leadership style adopted by the management is forwarded by the team leaders to every department and that has changed the structure of the company. For instance, the duty managers at each store lead the employees so that they can make decision every day in order to support the operation of the store. Further, duty managers are experts in management and they make sure that all the teams leaders are fully validated, trained and participative (Roe, 2014).
The leadership style in Tesco is democratic so their way of operations is decentralized and information is passed from the high management to lower employees in which everyone is able to contribute with their effective ideas for the growth of the company. The leadership practices in Tesco Management motivate the employees and they are considered as an important asset to the company. A leader motivates the employees by the reward and benefits i.e. providing a whole package to the employees to make more money, securing their future, looking after the health of the employees by giving them holiday and an award-winning pension scheme. Apart from this, the leadership style in the company also includes customer management in which they listen to the customers to provide better services.
Various leadership styles in different situations-
Tesco has adopted the democratic style of leadership due to the flat structure of the organization. This enables every employee to be a part of the organization. The leadership style in Tesco has revealed its effectiveness in the growth of the business. At Tesco, leaders are committed to help the employees and support to fulfil their needs.
Next, high-performance management is the part of the leadership style in Tesco. Every employee has key roles and responsibilities and that have objective to make sure that the best is provided to every customer. Further, the company has a transactional style of leadership also which works in the fixed set of organizational goals and objectives (Gumusluoglu & Ilsev, 2009). This is the task and result based leadership style that focuses on the performance evaluation and reward for the employees. The CEO of Tesco is a transformational leader as he is adaptable, constantly innovating and implementing new ideas that transform the retail industry. There are four key qualities that exist in transformational leadership i.e. idealized impact or credibility, inspired motivation, intellectual stimulation and individualized focus. In Tesco, leaders have highest intellectual stimulation as his ideas include maintaining minimum stock level, and minimising wastage (Samad, 2012).
