Leadership is the process by which a person can influence others in order to achieve the objectives and direct the organization in order to make it coherent and cohesive. Basically, leaders apply various leadership attributes i.e. ethics, values, beliefs, character, knowledge and skills. Leadership influences people with social skills and empathy and not by force and authority. Leaders basically bring positive changes into themselves in order to achieve the organizational goals and objectives. Further, organizational leadership is an ability to identify the potential among the people. It basically includes empowering people and recognizing their innovative thinking (Yukl, 2010). This report focuses on the organizational leadership case study and identifies the strategic challenges to remain ‘fit for future purpose’. For the discussion, the case study of the famous retail company Tesco is selected. The title of the case study is ‘Leadership transitions at Tesco- the challenges in store of Dave Lewis’. It is observed that the company has adopted different leadership styles based on the situations. So, it is a challenge for the company to implement proper leadership strategies. There are some strategic challenges that need to be addressed by new Tesco Chief Dave Lewis with a proper leadership plan (Perepu, 2015).
Reward process basically evaluates and recognizes the performance improvements of the company under the leadership styles. It basically includes two factors i.e. performance challenge and agility resilience that ensure the measures of the progress of the company, remove the blocks of the progress and move to the reflection phase. In case of Tesco, leaders are contributing to the growth of Tesco. Leadership is giving effective directions to the company so; leadership is an essential factor for the success of the business. In order to get desired results, leaders are bringing new changes in their styles. Further, to deal with the performance challenges in the business, the management of the company appoints individuals on the leadership roles so that employees are clear about their roles and responsibilities in order to take strategic decisions in the business. The leadership style adopted by the management is forwarded by the team leaders to every department and that has changed the structure of the company. For instance, the duty managers at each store lead the employees so that they can make decision every day in order to support the operation of the store. Further, duty managers are experts in management and they make sure that all the teams leaders are fully validated, trained and participative (Roe, 2014).
The leadership style in Tesco is democratic so their way of operations is decentralized and information is passed from the high management to lower employees in which everyone is able to contribute with their effective ideas for the growth of the company. The leadership practices in Tesco Management motivate the employees and they are considered as an important asset to the company. A leader motivates the employees by the reward and benefits i.e. providing a whole package to the employees to make more money, securing their future, looking after the health of the employees by giving them holiday and an award-winning pension scheme. Apart from this, the leadership style in the company also includes customer management in which they listen to the customers to provide better services.
Tesco has adopted the democratic style of leadership due to the flat structure of the organization. This enables every employee to be a part of the organization. The leadership style in Tesco has revealed its effectiveness in the growth of the business. At Tesco, leaders are committed to help the employees and support to fulfil their needs.
Next, high-performance management is the part of the leadership style in Tesco. Every employee has key roles and responsibilities and that have objective to make sure that the best is provided to every customer. Further, the company has a transactional style of leadership also which works in the fixed set of organizational goals and objectives (Gumusluoglu & Ilsev, 2009). This is the task and result based leadership style that focuses on the performance evaluation and reward for the employees. The CEO of Tesco is a transformational leader as he is adaptable, constantly innovating and implementing new ideas that transform the retail industry. There are four key qualities that exist in transformational leadership i.e. idealized impact or credibility, inspired motivation, intellectual stimulation and individualized focus. In Tesco, leaders have highest intellectual stimulation as his ideas include maintaining minimum stock level, and minimising wastage (Samad, 2012).
In order to get success in the operating market, Tesco needs to develop an effective leadership development plan. Based on the foregoing, it is observed that the business environment needs a reflective leader for enhancing the skills and competencies in such way that can address the needs of the company in a transformational and flexible way. In the organizational leadership context, cultural or emotional intelligence can be promoted in order to fill the gap between the market and corporate environment by focusing on the personal growth of the employees in the company. By adopting the development plan, the leadership competencies can be enhanced with the strong identification of the important factors i.e. recognition, awareness, decision-making skills, communication plan and implementation (Parris & Peachey, 2013).
In the company, this idea of adapting and growing as a leader can be enhanced for developing the leaders. People need to adopt the attitude, skills and practices that are important to operate the business at the global level. The leaders can effectively apply his or her leadership skills in the different situations that the person can describe as ‘fit for future purpose’. In the leadership plan, there are some ideas that need to be improved effectively (McKenzie & Aitken, 2012).
Initiating actions- The leader in the company should focus on the initiative actions while helping the employees to achieve the goals. The leader must be the person who can initiate the activities of the organization by the efficient communication. The communication process must include policies and business plan for the employees from where the tasks and roles start. The leader should also evaluate the advantage and disadvantage of the activities by which the employees’ performance can be enhanced.
Guidance- Leader should have sense of providing proper guidance to the employees and must play the role of guide for the employees by providing relevant information and instructions to them. Along with this, Leaders can apply various concepts in the strategic planning process to develop effective plans that lead to institutional changes.
This is the most important factor that must be present in leaders. Leaders need to develop confidence in the employees. Leaders should show the work efforts, explain tem the tasks and roles in the job, and providing effective guidelines to achieve the objectives of the organization. Leaders must implement appropriate strategies to manage with the change and protect the organization from various losses (Northouse, 2013).
Leadership is important to implement the change in the business for the desired outcomes. I have analyzed that I have leadership qualities by which I can influence the group of people to attain the common objective. I have the quality of leadership due to some basic qualities. By the Myer Brigs type of indicator, I can analyze my characteristics.
According to Myers Briggs Type Indicator, there are eight characteristics of leadership in a leader. In all eight characteristics, I have four main characteristics of leadership and those are as follows:
Effective leaders must be truthful and trustworthy for their followers. The leader should also maintain its character in front of the employees. I have honesty in my characteristics and that can be measured by degree of consistency which is present in my actions. Leaders have to coordinate with people to manage the change in the company. If the employees in the organization are influenced by me then I can be able to implement the changes in the business operations (Voegtlin, Patzer & Scherer, 2012).
The leader should be cheerful, inspiring, motivating and energetic about the future. I have a clear vision for the future. I have the ability to inspire the employees in the company by communicating with them about the mission and vision in order to set the goals and objectives of the organization. Further, I have the ability to allow various opportunities to the employees under me to convey their points of view. By providing the opportunity, I am able to easily understand the reasons of conflicts between two persons (Doz & Kosonen, 2009).
An effective leader should be capable, efficient, and productive. It is related to the feeling of belief of the followers for their leaders that he would be able to achieve the goals and objectives of the organization. I have the capability provide them relevant information about the important resources to enhance the performance in the business.
A leader should be a visionary can look forward to the future advantages of the company and he should also be concerned about the future. Employees should follow the leader by knowing that leader is doing right for them. For this, I will build an effective work environment for everyone in which employees enjoy doing their work (Van Wart, 2014).
Leaders have an important role in the success of the organization. I have the capability to establish a strong relationship with others which is important for the growth and development of the company. I am able to identify the needs of the people and always try to complete the needs so that can work with putting their best in the job role (Hoption, 2014).
It is assumed that leadership is the capability to manage and lead the people in the organization. There are various viewpoints that leadership is the motivating factor for the employees to achieve goals and objectives. Basically leadership is the process by which a person can lead to a group of individuals or a party to achieve some goals and objectives. There are some theories of leadership by which I can relate myself to enhance my leadership skills.
This theory includes various qualities i.e. motivation, honesty, self-confidence, knowledge of business, ability to perform any task by which the company can achieve growth and success. According to this theory, I must have capabilities to lead the organization. I have courage to ask the questions that are essential for the growth and success. I have ability and quality of self-belief, strong emotional intelligence and bravery. Thus, I can be a creative thinker for the organization (Gill, 2011).
Based on this theory, I must have a combination of heart and mind in the leadership style. I am capable of building up the relationship with the clients and associates in the organization. By the behavioural theory, I have the styles of leadership to motivate the people and I behave like leader on any particular situation.
The success of the leadership depends upon the situational factors i.e. how leaders react. This theory states that there is no any defined way to lead the organization effectively. I have quality to tack care of people in their tough time. I provide innovative ideas on the basis of situation so that success and growth can be achieved for the organization.
With leadership characteristics, leaders are able to influence the employees in the organization. I am able to manage the people in the organization so that organization can get good results in the business. I can enhance the satisfaction level of the employees due to leadership styles in me.
All these qualities are strengths for me because they are helping me to influence the people around me.
Skill assessment exercise- I need to develop the management competencies and skills that are important to manage an organization. The skills can be developed by the effective training, working culture of the organization, perception and self-learning process. I will develop the competencies for career growth and those are leadership skills, interpersonal skills, managing change, decision making, listening skills, negotiation skills, and problem-solving skills.
30-second commercial- I will get training of 30-second commercials in order to build my communication skills. This commercial will be helpful to make the listeners aware of me. It is also very helpful for me to express my impressive attributes. I will ask the senior managers to let me speak clearly about myself with confidence in a 30-second commercial. This will enhance my strength to face everyone.
I can enhance my leadership agility by influencing people everywhere. I can empower people and groups by my opinions, actions and visions. Leadership management is the reason of growth and development in business operations and it also strengthen the position of the organization in the operating market. It provides strengths to me to deal with complications, instability and achieve growth and success in the market. With the strength of leadership, I am able to take decisions in tough situations by inspired thinking so, I use the combination of mind and heart while making decisions.
Based on the overall discussion, it is observed that Leadership influences people with the social skills and empathy and not by the force and authority. In Tesco, leaders are bringing new changes in their styles. Further, to deal with the performance challenges in the business, the management of the company appoints individuals on the leadership roles so that employees are clear about their roles and responsibilities in order to take strategic decisions in the business. There are some strategic challenges in the company and for the new chief of Tesco; there is the need of proper leadership plan. Next, in the personal reflection, I have analyzed that I have ability to allow various opportunities to the employees under me to convey their point of views. Along with this, I have honesty in my characteristics and that can be measured by degree of consistency which is present in my actions. I will develop the competencies for the career growth and those are leadership skills, interpersonal skills, managing change, and decision making.
