Hand hygiene is a crucial topic to discuss as far as healthcare is concerned. Hand washing as per World Health Organization involves the use of clean running water, soap and a clean cloth. Soap works by destabilizing the bacteria and Virus cell wall hence killing the bacteria. Hand hygiene is sensitive in the nursing practice since it prevents the transfer of infections from one patient to another when tending the patients. Hand washing before switching one patient and another is a practice that most healthcare professionals don’t adhere to this leads to a high possibility of infections which could be quite disastrous. Three articles have been chosen for the annotated bibliography, the articles show the position of healthcare professionals as far as hand hygiene is concerned and how they perceive it. Its important to discuss this topic since its crucial in tending impatient and also the skill is important in day to day lives.

The healthcare systems should hold the hand hygiene protocols during their practice to prevent avoidable cross infections. It’s crucial for the nurses to wash hands before attending to a patient and clean and sterilize equipment. According to the article, about ten percent of hospital infections are caused by non-compliance to hand hygiene. According to research is done, soldiers during war die a lot when they have injuries. It was discovered that poor hand hygiene was the major cause due to hand infection contamination. After the introduction of hand brushes and the carrying of alcohol-based sanitisers in 1884, it prevented the mortality of the injured army soldiers in a way since the medical soldiers could sanitize their hands before they tend to the injured patients (Alefragkis, Alikari & Kelesi, 2018).

The article shows how healthcare professionals react to data from hand hygiene auditing. The method used in this article is by observation and interview questions. The sample population was 30 healthcare providers who were working in two England in the National Health Service. According to the data analysis, it is evident that the healthcare providers did not concur with the data from the hand hygiene data from the auditing. Actually, to be more specific twenty-two healthcare professionals found the data audit to be meaningless. According to the result, it’s evident that healthcare professionals need more awareness of the importance of hand hygiene. The sample population rejected the data on two bases: one was that the data lacked enough clarity as far as feedback is concerned and because there was no association between measurement and training (Dawson, 2015) The conclusion is that healthcare professionals have a negative attitude towards hand hygiene and most is that they don’t practice hand hygiene as required. There is still much to be done as far as the awareness of hand hygiene is concerned.

In this article, a study was done to affirm the effect of speaking up as far as hand hygiene is concerned. Speaking up is not only important in our daily lives but it helps us in making good decisions. The sample population was one thousand two hundred and seventeen and were distributed between five Swiss hospitals (Schwappach, 2018). The study was to investigate how frequent the health professionals were open to speaking up to a colleague who was not maintaining hand hygiene. Speaking up makes someone feel guilty about the topic in discussion. In this case, if a colleague is not maintaining proper hand hygiene when attending to patients and is told about it by another colleague guilt would force the colleague to maintain proper hand hygiene as dictated by the standard operating procedures.
In conclusion, it’s evident that healthcare providers are not sensitive as far as hand hygiene is concerned. Poor hand hygiene is responsible for the cross-infection of patients in hospital wards. As from the article healthcare professionals are reluctant in hand hygiene and thus could be tragic in handling infectious diseases. There should be multiple series of campaigns addressing hand hygiene to healthcare professionals. Speaking up is one of the most successful ways of ensuring hand hygiene is maintained among health professionals.
